The project
Port Regis School approached Snibor to design and build a new academic centre, following a close working relationship on several previous projects at the school. The school required an academic centre which incorporated 14 classrooms, IT facilities and staff offices.
The challenges
The school had already received budget costs from quantity surveyors, putting the scheme beyond their reach. We worked closely with the school, analysing the design and carrying out comparison costing with other school projects which we had completed. It wasn’t until we were sure that we could achieve the school’s desired result, from its budget, that we began full design work.
The solution
Port Regis School was keen to make full use of sustainable and renewable energy sources, to offset long-term fuel increases and reduce CO2 emissions. During the design stage and working within budget, we added geothermal heating, a pioneering natural ventilation system and automated lighting.
The results
The JM Upward Academic Centre provides a wonderful atrium which brings light into the central avenue and provides the lungs and heat source for 14 classrooms.
