The project
This project was the culmination of various developments over an extended five-year period for Sherborne International College. The three-storey building which was part of the overall plan was constructed using Chailey Rustic Stock bricks, with a traditional plain tiled roof to complement the adjoining stone building. The new building houses 12 classrooms and four science laboratories.
The challenges
The building was to be constructed on existing foundations, laid by the previous builder, five years earlier. Rather like an archaeological dig, these needed to be exposed and checked thoroughly, before being used to build on. No access was available through the college’s main entrance, making craning materials very difficult up to and over three storeys.
The solution
Exposing the foundations was our first priority, to confirm whether they were where we expected them – and no delays would be incurred to the project. It was with great relief that the foundations were found to be as expected; brick and block work got started straight away. Then, access was opened up at the rear of the site, with a temporary road, allowing the correct size of cranes access to the site to carry out their lifts.
The results
Snibor completed the three-storey building project on budget and before its completion date, owing, in part, to the excellent management techniques of the build project, adopted from the outset.
